Gemma’s Mother’s Day Message

10 May 2019 by Krystal Barter

My name is Gemma, I’m 29 and I lost my precious mum to triple negative breast cancer in 2014. I am BRCA1 and currently on my way to a preventative mastectomy and reconstruction. My mum was the most selfless person I have ever known, if I can be half the person she was I will be happy. She never faltered throughout her battle with cancer and even at the very end, she put others needs and feelings before her own. She taught me to be strong and I carry her strength with me now through my BRCA1 story.

1. What words of wisdom do you carry with you each day from your Mother?
You can do this, everything will be ok! I can often hear her voice saying those words whenever I feel lost or when things get really hard. She believed in me every day for my entire life and I can still feel her encouraging me now.

2. What words of wisdom do you have for women today?

You are so bloody strong, stronger than you know. You have got this.

3. Do you have a message that you would like to share on Mother’s day for the Pink Hope community?

Live your life, live it however you want. Have fun, make mistakes, learn, laugh and love. Don’t have any regrets and hug your mum!
