Meet Emma | @queenmmaknight “ I’m mum to two gorgeous girls, I have a full on job, a big family and some amazing friends.
My ‘jooouuurney’ began on January 2nd 2018 when I found an almond-shaped lump in my right boob, aka ‘Lumpalot’. By January 31st I’d been diagnosed with Triple Negative Breast Cancer which had spread to my lymph nodes, aka ‘Lymphalot’. Together dubbed by my lump-naming brother as the ‘Gruesome Twosome’. I began chemotherapy on February 19th 2018 to target a tumour that was growing at a scary rate, getting to at least 6x5cm at one point. I think more judging by the size, shape and colour of my boob in March.

I am also sad because my eyebrows and eyelashes are falling out. angry because my mom has cancer. scared because there is a pandemic. frustrated because I can’t be with my friends and family.

I often feel pressure to “stay positive”. to be happy. as if my positive feelings will dissolve the cancer growing inside me. And although I am often positive, there is more to surviving. to living than just this feeling. So instead I invite all of my emotions. I hold anger. dance with sorrow. sit with grief. I hug fear. scream at pain. sleep beside loneliness.

And I walk beside joy. dine with happiness. embrace serenity.

I feel. I feel big feelings and quiet feelings and painful feelings. I feel because to live is to feel. And for me, it would be a tragedy to cease living while fighting for life.

You don’t have to stay positive. to pretend you’re ok. to put on a mask (unless you’re going outside... then wear a mask and stay away from people...). You need only to feel whatever it is you feel.

“Surgery went well today; no issues and the expanders are out. For the last 9 months I’ve had tissue expanders that have been a huge pain. I have been miserable this past week stressing about surgery and dying. I know it’s irrational thinking but I couldn’t turn it off. I have a huge sense of calm and comfort right now, even with drains out my side and huge incisions on my breast. I’m thrilled to see & feel these new boobs when the swelling goes down."⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I’m 27 years old from Adelaide, South Australia, and I’ve been diagnosed with Stage 1, Triple Negative Breast Cancer.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When I was diagnosed, I was desperate to connect with other people whose worlds had also been tipped upside down in one word. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I found solace in reading their stories, and felt inspired to uncover the strength and resilience that lies dormant within each of us, in order to tackle it head on. I hope by sharing my story, others feel they can do the same.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

✨I was lucky enough to find my tumour before it had metastasised. With an 80% division rate, my outcome could have been dramatically different had I not found it when I did. ⁣I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: know your body, know your risk.⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
✨I was lucky to develop a type of cancer that has received a significant amount of research and funding. This. Is. Everything. Without funding, there is no research. Without research, there are no treatment options. Without treatment options, there is little hope. We must continue to give generously to reputable organisations that are progressively working toward a cure.⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
