Giving Back to Our Community – Emma
Pink Hope’s Glimmer of Hope program aims to support the women and families within our at-risk community at a time when they are going through surgery, treatment or caring for a family member.
This Glimmer of Hope was made possible with the support of Eat Fit Food. To learn more about Eat Fit Food see their website, www.eatfitfood.com.au.
Emma, 31, was in Thailand when she discovered a golf ball size lump in her left breast. Her instant reaction was fear, having witnessed the death of her Grandfather from metastatic breast cancer nearly two decades ago. With Doctors initially thinking this was a common benign fibroendenoma, she underwent surgery in Phuket only to wake to discover that this was in fact a Grade 3 Invasive Ductal Carcinoma. Once home in Sydney she investigated her Grandfather’s medical files and discovered his Aunt and Niece had also died from breast cancer. Having been offered genetic counselling and testing, there was no surprise that the results revealed that Emma was a BRCA1 gene mutation carrier. With the access of genetic testing she was able to reduce her chance of recurrence by choosing a double mastectomy, and as fourth generation breast cancer patient, can hopefully end the paternal line breast cancer curse.
Emma is now cancer free and determined to help other young women overcome the fear and challenges that BRCA gene mutation carriers face, and help encourage genetic testing as this is a powerful tool for prevention.
Emma’s Glimmer of Hope
Unfortunately, Emma was in hospital for three weeks having suffered post op complications and infections from her bilateral mastectomy as a result of low immunity from chemotherapy. On her return home, Emma and her partner were provided a Glimmer of Hope with Eat Fit Food providing her with healthy meals to aid her recovery.
A Message from Emma
“Pink Hope’s Glimmer of Hope campaign is such a wonderful initiative, one I’m so grateful to be on the receiving end of. Being provided healthy meals at home By Eat Fit Food ensures that this battered body of mine is getting the nourishment that it needs to continue to heal, and that is such a massive help. I have been overwhelmed by this support as it is one less worry for my partner and I.”
Thank you Pink Hope and Eat Fit Food for your generosity and kindness during this time of recovery.
