Pink Hope’s Member of the Month program recognises a member of the Pink Hope community who supports and inspires other increased risk women and represents the mission of Pink Hope.
Corinne’s Member of the Month
Pink Hope is so proud to recognise Corinne as member of the month. Corinne has attended events, held fundraisers, supported other high risk women and with her family participated in the Bright Pink Lipstick Day campaign.
During the Christmas period of 2015 Corinne learnt that her father had tested positive to being a carrier of a BRCA2 mutation. Following a family discussion about the process of genetic testing and prevalent cancers in the family, along with the loss of her paternal grandmother to breast cancer in her early forties, Corinne decided – with the support of her parents, brother and sisters, to commence attendance at Peter Mac’s Familial Cancer Centre to further understand her risk of developing breast or ovarian cancer, conduct gene testing and find out more information about preventative measures.
Corinne tested positive for a BRCA2 gene mutation in April 2016 and attended the Pink Hope Conference a week later, after being invited by her sister Rachelle – who is also a carrier. Following initial ‘high risk’ screening, including an MRI, mammogram and ultrasound, she made the monumental decision that she will undertake a risk-reducing bilateral mastectomy at the end of 2017 to significantly reduce her risk of developing breast cancer.
A Message from Corinne
“Knowing my ‘risk’ status has allowed me to address significant life choices and take action. I have made an effort to improve my physical health and mental well-being in preparation for my surgery, along with taking steps to protect and preserve my fertility. I feel that I am now in a position to control certain parts of my life that can often feel out of control.
I thank Pink Hope and the ‘ladies’, who from day one, have provided me with love, support and answers – they “just get it”. I know that I can turn to them at any time for advice but we also ensure that we can cast the worries aside and have a good time together.”
