It wasn’t until several family members were diagnosed with cancer and subsequently got tested that we had ever heard of the BRCA gene. I was 18 when I tested positive but the processes of preventative surgery is often a long one. In November of 2017 I had a bilateral nipple sparing mastectomy with DIEP reconstruction.
Having a strong support network was extremely important for me, and thankfully I was put in touch with Pink Hope. I’ve met some wonderful women both online and through Pink Hope events. Their support and kindness assisted me on my journey in so many ways and I hope to continue to connect with these fantastic women.
A message from Brodie
I think I’m lucky to have the opportunity to have preventative surgery, lucky to have such a fantastic support network, and lucky to feel empowered by my decisions.
I consider myself truly lucky even though I carry the BRCA1 gene mutation.
